Slovakia is a country with various natural features: swamps, plains, rivervallies, hills and even moutains. It has a very high biodiversity. If you can imagine that in this country are still living approximately 350 wolves, 600 bears and 400 lynxes in the wild, this proves something. The lynx has even left his footprints 300 meters away of our countryhouse. This country has still a lot of wild areas and just because of this variation in the landscape, a lot of animals and plants do survive. It has a surface of appr. 49,000 km2 and has a population of 5 milion people, in comparison with Belgium with 30,000 km2 and the Netherlands with 37,000 km2. The areas with forestation are around 45 percent. In short, a rather "green and natural" country.

Nová Baňa
Historically seen, Nová Baňa belonged to one of the 7th most imported mining cities. It is the youngest mine city (Nova Baňa = new mine). They dug for gold. The heavy mill stones which you can find in the city, are quiet witnesses of a rich past. Also the lake " tajch " (now a recreational place) can be considered a relict of the glorious past, when water was needed to be stored for the mining industry. This city counts ca 7000 inhabitants. During the last weekend of September, the yearly fair takes place in the centre of the city. Nová Baňa is rather hilly and it has some clearly signposted walks. Because of its situated in the centre of the country, you can leave for any kind of direction. The highway is 5 km away from the city, or 10 km away from the countryhouse. So, easy to reach and to start from.

There are two cashomats. There are also some banks. Only in some of the small shops, you can pay with your bank card. There is a post office.
SHOPPING
There are two supermarkets, LIDL and COOP Jednota almost next to each other and also CBA. It is possible to pay with bank card. In COOP Jednota you can find a rather greater assortment of slovakian made products, so ecologically more friendly. When you park on the LIDL parking, you can reach COOP from there out on foot. It s only 30 meters away from it.
REFUEL
Nová Baňa has one gas station, in the neighebourhood of the train and buss station. It s open non-stop. You can also buy toll sticker for the highway.
RESTAURANTS
To have a good meal, there are various options. You can find some excellent pizzerias. You can even order by phone and they deliver it by car (in case of any help, we can order it for you). They used to give some additional beer to the pizza s and they deliver it for free when you make a bigger order ( Pizzeria Riallto).
During the working week, you can choose from 4 menu s in some restaurants. They are offered in the restaurant "Zlatý Bažant" (golden pheasant) which has a rather boring interior, but they cook in their own kitchen and the food is very tasty. During summer, you can sit on the terrace. Restaurant "Restauracia v Uličke" (restaurant in the small street) is very scenic, serves good meals and has a fine interior. There is also a terrace. The price for a meal of the menu, including soup and a glass of water is between 3 and 4 euros per person.
